What do the actions and attitudes of the East India Company tell you about the nature of seventeenth-century companies? What are some similarities with and differences from corporations today and how did the nature of the company affect the process of making peace between it and the Mughal Empire? Why did the Mughals think the English were not merchants, but were actually uncivilized pirates?

Ok this is a tricky one.
We are doing a proposal leading up to a bigger paper.
Single-subject design project guidelines

Single‐subject research projects are used to test the effects of an intervention (or interventions) on a targeted dependent variable (or variables) for a single individual, group, or other system. For this assignment, you can choose any subject or system you would like, however you will need to obtain informed consent/assent and agency permission as applicable. There are two parts to this assignment: a project proposal and the final project report, which will resemble a peer-reviewed paper. Each student in this class should complete this assignment individually, although you may discuss with your classmates.

Proposal: (10% of final grade)
In this assignment, you will include:
1. A brief (1-2 pages) introduction, including a descriiption of the individual/system, the problem you will address, and a bit of background with references (you should include a minimum of 3 peer reviewed references published within the last 15 years) to the literature. Be sure to protect the confidentiality of the individual/system (e.g., no real names). You don’t need the entire life history of the participant, but you need enough information to understand why they need to address the problem(s) and why the intervention is a good choice.
2. A descriiption of the intervention you will use and the study design. (~1-2 paragraphs) Describe your design (e.g., AB) and the length of time dedicated to each phase. Specify goals for your intervention (e.g., reduce anxiety by 50%; improve depression scores out of the clinically depressed range on a particular measure).
3. A descriiption of the targets you will measure (I want at least two) and how you will measure them. (~one juicy paragraph each, or whatever works best for flow). Be specific with your measurement plan! What/when/how often, etc. It should be detailed enough that a reader could repeat your procedures exactly. These may include behavioral observations, individualized rating scales, standardized questionnaires, or client logs. One of your measurements must be a multi-dimensional scale that is described in the published literature. Please include copies of all your measurement tools as appendices. If you want to develop your own measures, please include all questions you will ask and how answers will be given.
4. Discuss the ethics of your project and how you will protect your participant(s). (Length will vary)
I am the test subject.
I’m thinking the intervention could be a guided meditation 30 minutes before bed 3 times a week(source) and use an established sleep measurement from the literature to measure sleep (quality?duration?). And a pain scale as the other measurement. Any surgery research literature (preferably dental) and sleep, pain literature would probably work.
Major Dental Surgery affecting sleep, pain
1. I’ve had major dental surgery and have a mouth full of stitches. I propose to compare my stress levels, weight
2. What measures you’re planning to use. Reminders: I need you to have two different measures in your project, and one of them must use an established multidimensional scale (like last semester). The other measure can be anything, including something you’ve developed yourself. It’s also okay to use two different measures of the same outcome, although I’d like a good reason for that (example: you might use a published anxiety scale, then generate your own daily checklist for how anxiety might affect you in ways that scale doesn’t capture).
I’ll use an established stress test once I find one I like and chart of my weight
Please also note whether these measures will need to be adjusted (e.g., do they ask about the last two weeks?).
3. What design you’re considering (AB, ABC, ABAB, etc.)
Probably an AB design
4. What intervention(s) you’re considering, along with some detail about it/them.
I guess my main intervention the sudden change in diet. No more sold foods for the foreseeable future.
5. How long your phases will be. (Note: it’s theoretically possible to complete this project in six days, but I want a more substantial endeavor!)
I assume a solid month yield some date on note.
1. What situation or problem you’re considering targeting (e.g., stress, anxiety, sleep, caffeine intake, etc.).
2. What measures you’re planning to use. Reminders: I need you to have two different measures in your project, and one of them must use an established multidimensional scale (like last semester). Here is what we are working towards but again only the Proposal.
here are some questions the instructor asked

Each of the scriiptures below concern a given criminal procedure topic. All scriiptures are from the New International Version, Essay essay help site:edu

Each of the scriiptures below concern a given criminal procedure topic. All scriiptures are from the New International Version, 1984. Begin this assignment by meditating on the given scriiptures. You may even want to pray about them. Psalm 119:18 recommends this prayer: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Once you have done that, answer the questions below.

Witnesses

Deuteronomy 19:15 “One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”
Deuteronomy 17:6 “On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.”
Cross Examination

Proverbs 18:17 “The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.”
Deuteronomy 19:16–19 “If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, the two men involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you.”
Physical Evidence

Deuteronomy 22:13–18 “If a man takes a wife and, after lying with her, dislikes her and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” then the girl’s father and mother shall bring proof that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. The girl’s father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him.”
Exodus 22:12-13 “But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, he must make restitution to the owner. If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, he shall bring in the remains as evidence and he will not be required to pay for the torn animal.”
Answer the following questions for your thread:

Did these scriiptures change or confirm your views about how criminal procedure should operate according to each topic?
How does our current system deal with each topic?
How could our current system change (or not) to deal with each topic in a more biblical manner?

Based on the arguments and discussion from the course materials, do you believe that people who have their needs met and are able to purchase some luxuries are morally obligated to help people in absolute poverty? Why or why not?
Based on the arguments and discussion from the course materials, do you think there should be reparations to African-Americans? Why or why not? If so, what should those reparations be?
Below is another students’ discussion posts and respond in Prompt #1 which is below- write a least 60 words on whether and why you agree or disagree with what they said.
I total agree that there should be reparations for African Americans.  Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Testimony on Reparations underscores why it should not be up for discussion, slaves were and the largest single asset to American Slave owners, more than all other assets in the country.  We are still suffering from the ill of slavery beyond the 1800’s into modern day society as we continue to strive to bring equity in all facets of society for African Americans.  There are so many families that as the articles state did not get the enjoy the benefits of economic security, and when we did with such communities like Black Wall Street, once again they were wiped out to reduce political and economic power and freedom that comes with wealth.  Finally, for all the products that were designed, developed, and contributed to make America, the great nation its supposedly is, African Americans and their generations that followed are owed to opportunity to joy the benefits of their building of America and those products we benefit from today.  This argument that individuals of today are not responsible for the ill will of those before them should also not have the benefits of the ill that those individuals stole.
In theory, the three acres and a mule should apply, including land and the teaching of how to cultivate that land into an economic wealth for their families.  In addition, generations of family’s impact by redlining, bombing and displacement of black wealth economic centers and patents should be either restored with an education component around the importance of managing wealth.  The victims and their family members are very much alive today and we continue to see laws and practices today that continue to prolong the inequity in our communities.
Quiz 7
1.     From the course materials, what is the core argument in favor of believing that affluent people (whose basic needs are met and have some luxuries) are morally obligated to assist people in absolute poverty? Attempt to state the argument in logically valid form, so it is clear what the premises are and how they lead to the conclusion.

GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR SPEECH SELF-EVALUATION One of the most direct and efficient means to improve the quality of essay help: essay help

GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR SPEECH SELF-EVALUATION

One of the most direct and efficient means to improve the quality of your speech delivery is to take some time to reflect on your experience. This is true whether you delivered your speech in front of a live audience (in-person), on a live stream broadcast (with viewers in their own homes) or self-taping a video recording for an audience to watch. When you are forced to observe a recording of yourself, it is easy to pick on any flaws that you see in yourself, especially when the assignment is a form of self-critique.

REQUIREMENTS

-Ten complete sentences minimum

GUIDELINES AND IDEAS

As long as you write ten complete sentences minimum, you can address any of the following ideas in your reflection. You are not required to address them all:

– Consider your emotional and physical state and your level of nervousness before during and after your speech. What did you feel? What did you think? Identifying things that made you confident and things that made you lose confidence are a great way to prepare for and prevent obstacles as you grow in your public speaking skills.

-What worked for you? What did you notice go well in your speech? What will you try again? What didn’t work? Any problems that you faced? What are you going to try and improve next time?

-Recording a video of yourself and trying to make everything perfect before you post it can be sometimes stressful and time consuming. How did your chosen recording environment work for you or not work for you? How might you make some changes to improve your recording environment or process?

-As far as the qualities of your speech delivery, you can consider reflecting on the attributes:

-Speaking pace: too fast? too slow? Even if you are a naturally fast speaker (I know that I am), you may find yourself speaking even faster when you are even a little nervous. When a speaker talks too fast, the audience may miss the message or be distracted. When a speaker speaks too slowly, the audience may be annoyed or distracted. We don’t always speak at a “perfect” pace but we can be aware of our pace

-Volume: too loud or too soft? Are we knocking our audiences out of their seats with a huge booming voice? Or are we struggling to hear a whispering speech in the video audio, even with headphones?

-Variety: Use of higher, medium and lower pitches. Small, medium or large pitch range. There’s nothing wrong with a speaking voice that is monotone (or has a limited range of vocal pitch when speaking). However, this technique of naturally using a wider range of pitch (speaking in lower and higher tones than we do naturally), may increase audience “liking” of the speaker and their message

-Tone: Conversational or stilted and awkward? A great speech presentation can feel like a conversation, even when it is one-sided (and the speaker doesn’t ask their audience any questions). It can also feel casual, relaxed, natural and authentic. However, some presentations can feel overly formal, stilted, awkward and/or unprepared. Is the tone serious, relaxed, funny, friendly, cold, formal?

-Manuscriipt or Extemporaneous? A manuscriipt speech delivery sounds and looks like a speaker reading from a piece of paper for the first time, unsure, word for word, more robotic. An extemporaneous speech looks and sounds like a speaker who is speaking freely, conversationally, naturally, without relying on notes too much.

-Gesture (w/ hand and arm movement): none, some or much gesture? Natural vs. unnatural? (many commercials, some youtubers, some salespeople, political speeches at the podium) over exaggerate hand movement and gesture vs. a natural hand and arm movement that accompanies discussion and explanation.

The Case of “Threatening Voices”

DSM-IV-TR Casebook

“A 44-year-old unemployed man who lived alone in a single-room-occupancy hotel was brought to the emergency room by police, to whom he had gone for help, complaining that he was frightened by hearing voices of men in the street below his window talking about him and threatening him with harm. When he looked out the window, the men had always “disappeared.”

The patient had a 20-year history of almost daily alcohol use, was commonly “drunk” each day, and often had experienced the “shakes” on awakening. On the previous day, he had reduced his intake to 1 pint of vodka because of gastrointestinal distress. He was fully alert and oriented on mental status examination.”

Then, let’s discuss the differential diagnosis process that you might go through if this client were referred to you for assessment and treatment. Which substance-related diagnoses might you be considering, and which mental illnesses might you be keeping in mind for when you consult with a mental health practitioner? What other substances might lead to some of the symptoms the client reports? What additional information would you want to know about this client? What considerations or tips from your readings might you be keeping in mind when conducting your assessment and working with this client? Be sure to explain and support your comments!

Evolutionary Biologist Profile (This info can also be found in this file: ExtraCredit2022.pdf ExtraCredit2022.pdf – Alternative Formats ) Due essay help

Evolutionary Biologist Profile

(This info can also be found in this file: ExtraCredit2022.pdf ExtraCredit2022.pdf – Alternative Formats )
Due date: May 2, 11:59 PM. Submit via TurnItIn link under the Homework tab.
Overview:
The purpose of this assignment is to give you insight into evolutionary biologists that are currently conducting research and how they wound up where they are. Because a lot of what you read in textbooks is about white men, this comes at the expense of underrepresented groups. The list that you will have to choose from consists of scientists who are women, trans, Hispanic/Latinx, disabled, LBGTQ , African American, Native American, gender non-conforming, or some combination of these.

Task:
Your assignment is to pick one of these scientists, learn about their academic history and research, and write a profile of them.

To pick your scientist:

Go to this google form: https://forms.gle/oDt5GhXCJZ8t2Me67
Enter your information.
Look through the list of scientists. The list just shows names. All of these names are taken from the DiversifyEEB list (https://diversifyeeb.com/). You can start there to look for more information on some of the scientists, e.g. if you want to profile a scientist who is Latinx, you may find that information there. You can also go to the scientists’ webpages to learn about them. (Note that not everyone on DiversifyEEB is on our list.)
When you have decided who you want to profile, select their name in the google form. Once you pick a person, you are committed to that person, so do a little research first to make sure that you can learn enough about them.
After you fill out the form, the person that you pick will no longer be available for another student to choose, so it is up to you to do a good job for that person.

Research your scientist:

Find your scientist’s webpage to begin to learn about their academic history and current research.
Look for your scientist’s C.V., which is like a resume for academics. This will tell you where they completed their degrees and what academic positions they have held. It will also give you information about their research history and publications. Not everyone will have their C.V. online—that’s okay, just learn as much as you can from their website(s) about these things.
Find recent publications from your scientist. Go to Google Scholar and find the two most highly cited publications and the two most recent publications from your scientist. Read these papers.

Product:
Using this information and any other sources you wish to draw from, write a 1-2 page (<500 word) scientific biography of your scientist. One way to think about this is as an introduction that you might read if this person were coming to the UH Biology and Biochemistry Department to give a talk. In this introduction, you will want to convey:

Your scientist’s academic and scientific background. Where and when did they receive their Ph.D.? Did they do post-doctoral research? Did they have other positions prior to their current position? What is their current position and how long have they been there? (Include as much of this information as you are able to find.)
What are the general fields and main themes of your scientist’s research?
What research are they most known for? This is likely reflected by their most cited publications and their website’s research statement.
What recent work is happening in your scientist’s lab? Base this on the recent publications and the website.
Include a Bibliography where you cite the references for the papers from the scientist that you read, list their website(s) that you used, and cite any other sources that you used.

**Note that all of these must be written in your own words and not copied from their website or publications. (TurnItIn will be used to confirm this.) Write in terms that non-specialists would understand.

**This is an individual project–you may not work with a group.

I have already chosen a scientist. Jannice Friedman

In this lesson, you read two texts about the Sirens and the song of the Sirens. The topic for this Word Journal is the Sirens. Choose one adjective to describe the Sirens as presented in the adapted Homer text “The Sirens: Scylla and Charybdis; Thrinacia I.” Then explain your word choice.

Background: The Odyssey
The Odyssey is the second of two epic poems written by the Greek poet Homer. Homer’s first poem, The Iliad, tells of the intrigues and events of the final weeks of the Trojan War. In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was a conflict waged by the Greeks against the city of Troy. The trouble began when Paris, Troy’s leader, took Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, from her husband, the leader of Sparta, a Greek city-state. Although the story spans only a few weeks, it provides rich background information about Greek gods and goddesses, Greek legends of the conflict, and earlier events of the war. The Iliad introduces Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who is the voice of reason and a pillar of self-control among the more volatile characters on the side of the Greeks.

Odysseus returns in The Odyssey, a poem that recounts his 10-year journey home from the Trojan War to Ithaca and his family. Odysseus faces numerous challenges in the voyage home, including conflicts with the gods, encounters with mythical creatures, and difficulties managing the crew he travels with. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is depicted as heroic, strong, and shrewd. However, like every classic Greek hero, he has a major flaw: pride. When his pride turns to arrogance, or hubris, Odysseus runs into trouble. Fortunately, Odysseus is able to learn from his experiences, heed the advice of others, and apply his sharp intelligence to reach home.

This excerpt from The Odyssey describes Odysseus’s encounter with the Sirens, mythical bird-woman creatures believed to be daughters of the river god Achelous. Sirens are depicted in different ways in works of art and in literature; some say there were two Sirens, others three. Some portray the Sirens with women’s heads and bird bodies, others with bird legs, but human upper bodies. While their appearance is intriguing, it is the Siren’s song that makes them notorious. From their island home, the Sirens sang enchanting, haunting songs that lured passing sailors toward their island, where their ships would crash on the rocky shore. The island’s shores were said to be littered with the bones of dead sailors. Only a few men were known to have heard the Siren’s song and lived to tell about it. One of these men was Odysseus.

Examining a Source Text: The Odyssey
Read the excerpt from The Odyssey in which the sorceress Circe provides Odysseus and his men with a plan to resist the Sirens’ song and safely continue their journey.

From “The Sirens: Scylla and Charybdis; Thrinacia I”
By Homer, as adapted by H. L. Havell

After the evening meal Circe drew Odysseus apart, and questioned him on all that he had seen and heard on that strange journey, from which he had returned, as she said, like one ransomed from death. And when he had told his story she instructed him as to the course which he had to steer on leaving the island, and warned him against the manifold perils of the voyage.

“First,” said she, “thou wilt come to the rocks of the Sirens, maidens of no mortal race, who beguile the ears of all that hear them. Woe to him who draws near to listen to their song! He shall never see the faces of his wife and children again, or feel their arms about his neck, but there he shall perish, and there his bones shall rot. Therefore take heed, and when thou drawest near the place stop the ears of thy men with wax, and bid them bind thee fast with cords, that thou mayest hear the song of the Sirens. And when that seducing melody fills thine ears, thou wilt beg and implore thy comrades to set thee free, that thou mayest draw near and have speech of the Sirens. Then let them bind thee more firmly to the mast, and take to their oars, and fly the enchanted rocks.”

. . .

In the distance a low-lying coast appeared, which Odysseus knew to be the island of the Sirens. Forthwith he began to make his preparations to meet the danger which lay before them. Taking a ball of wax he cut it into small pieces, and having worked each piece in his hand until it was soft and plastic he carefully stopped the ears of all his men with the wax. Then two of the crew, to whom he had already given his orders, bound him hand and foot to the mast of the vessel. All being ready, they rowed forward until they came within full view of the island. And there, in a low-lying meadow hard by the sea, sat the Sirens; lovely they were of aspect, and gracious of mien; but all around them were piled the bones of men who had fallen victims to their wicked wit, fleshless ribs, from which the skin still hung in yellow shreds, and grinning skulls, gazing with eyeless sockets at the sea.

As the ship drew near, the whole choir lifted up their voices and began to sing a sweet and piercing strain, which thrilled the very marrow of Odysseus as he listened. The winds hovered near on flagging wing, the sea lay locked in deep repose, and all nature paused with attentive ear, to catch the SONG OF THE SIRENS.

“Mighty warrior, sage renowned,
Turn, O turn thy bark this way!
Rest upon this holy ground,
Listen to the Sirens’ lay.
Never yet was seaman found
Passing our enchanted bay,
But he paused, and left our bound
Filled with wisdom from his stay.
All we know, whatever befell
On the tented fields of Troy,
All the lore that Time can tell,
All the mystic fount of joy.”

It was a strain cunningly calculated to flatter a deep, subtle spirit like that of Odysseus. To know all! to read all secrets, and unravel the tangled skein of human destiny! What a bribe was this to this restless and eager mind! Then the voices of the witch-women were so liquid, and the music so lovely, that they took the very air with ravishment, and melted the hearer’s soul within him. Odysseus struggled to break his bonds, and nodded to his men to come and loose him. But they, who had been warned of this very thing, rose up and bound him with fresh cords. Then they grasped their oars again, the water roared under their sturdy strokes, and soon they were out of hearing of that seductive melody.

Background: “Siren Song”
Margaret Atwood is a contemporary Canadian poet and author of novels, short stories, and essays. Atwood is known for exploring many facets of human behavior, women’s roles in society, and the natural world. In the poem “Siren Song,” Atwood reinterprets the Sirens in a more modern, lighthearted way. In doing so, she provides deeper perspective on the motivations of the Sirens. Atwood examines the forces that drive the Sirens’ behavior in an effort to make broader statements about human nature.

In “Siren Song,” the speaker in the poem is a Siren, who addresses her audience in a conversational tone. In the beginning of the poem, the speaker suggests that everyone would love to have the ability to attract others at will. However, the poem takes an unexpected and amusing turn when the speaker expresses discontent with her role. Does the Siren in Atwood’s poem despise or delight in the song she sings? Let this question guide your thinking as you explore “Siren Song.”

Like many poems, “Siren Song” is written in stanzas. Stanzas provide a visual structure and format to a poem. Stanzas help poets create desired effects like rhyme, meter, pauses, and transitions between ideas or moods. Each stanza presents a thought, idea, or action. Poets use stanzas to link ideas together and to create overarching meaning.

To explore the meaning of “Siren Song,” follow these steps:

Analyze the title to help predict the poem’s overall meaning or message.
Read the poem through once to identify the central idea.
Reread the poem, stanza by stanza, to determine what each stanza tells you, how each stanza fits with the rest of the poem, and why Atwood includes each stanza in the poem.
Consider how each stanza fits with the stanza that precedes it.
Consider how the stanzas fit together to create the poem’s overall meaning or message.
Once you have gained a deeper understanding of “Siren Song,” you can then compare and contrast Atwood’s interpretation of the Sirens with the way they are represented in the excerpt from The Odyssey.

Siren Song
By Margaret Atwood

This is the one song everyone
would like to learn: the song
that is irresistible:

the song that forces men
to leap overboard in squadrons
even though they see the beached skulls

the song nobody knows
because anyone who has heard it
is dead, and the others can’t remember.

Shall I tell you the secret
and if I do, will you get me
out of this bird suit?

I don’t enjoy it here
squatting on this island
looking picturesque and mythical

with these two feathery maniacs,
I don’t enjoy singing
this trio, fatal and valuable.

I will tell the secret to you,
to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song

is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can,
you are unique

at last. Alas
it is a boring song
but it works every time.

Background
Author James Russell Lowell, in his 1840 poem “The Sirens,” draws on the story of the Sirens to explore aspects of human nature such as temptation and escapism, or the desire to retreat from harsh realities in a seeming paradise.

The Sirens
By James Russell Lowell

The sea is lonely, the sea is dreary,
The sea is restless and uneasy;
Thou seekest quiet, thou art weary,
Wandering thou knowest not whither;—
Our little isle is green and breezy,
Come and rest thee! Oh come hither,
Come to this peaceful home of ours,
Where evermore
The low west-wind creeps panting up the shore
To be at rest among the flowers;
Full of rest, the green moss lifts,
As the dark waves of the sea
Draw in and out of rocky rifts,
Calling solemnly to thee
With voices deep and hollow,—
“To the shore
Follow! Oh, follow!
To be at rest forevermore!
Forevermore!”

Look how the gray old Ocean
From the depth of his heart rejoices,
Heaving with a gentle motion,
When he hears our restful voices;
List how he sings in an undertone,
Chiming with our melody;
And all sweet sounds of earth and air
Melt into one low voice alone,
That murmurs over the weary sea,
And seems to sing from everywhere,—
“Here mayst thou harbor peacefully,
Here mayst thou rest from the aching oar;
Turn thy curvèd prow ashore,
And in our green isle rest forevermore!
Forevermore!”
And Echo half wakes in the wooded hill,
And, to her heart so calm and deep,
Murmurs over in her sleep,
Doubtfully pausing and murmuring still,
“Evermore!”
Thus, on Life’s weary sea,
Heareth the marinere
Voices sweet, from far and near,
Ever singing low and clear,
Ever singing longingly.
Is it not better here to be,
Than to be toiling late and soon?
In the dreary night to see
Nothing but the blood-red moon
Go up and down into the sea;
Or, in the loneliness of day,
To see the still seals only
Solemnly lift their faces gray,
Making it yet more lonely?
Is it not better than to hear
Only the sliding of the wave
Beneath the plank, and feel so near
A cold and lonely grave,
A restless grave, where thou shalt lie
Even in death unquietly?
Look down beneath thy wave-worn bark,
Lean over the side and see
The leaden eye of the sidelong shark
Upturnèd patiently,
Ever waiting there for thee:
Look down and see those shapeless forms,
Which ever keep their dreamless sleep
Far down within the gloomy deep,
And only stir themselves in storms,
Rising like islands from beneath,
And snorting through the angry spray,
As the frail vessel perisheth
In the whirls of their unwieldy play;
Look down! Look down!
Upon the seaweed, slimy and dark,
That waves its arms so lank and brown,
Beckoning for thee!
Look down beneath thy wave-worn bark
Into the cold depth of the sea!
Look down! Look down!
Thus, on Life’s lonely sea,
Heareth the marinere
Voices sad, from far and near,
Ever singing full of fear,
Ever singing drearfully.

Here all is pleasant as a dream;
The wind scarce shaketh down the dew,
The green grass floweth like a stream
Into the ocean’s blue;
Listen! Oh, listen!
Here is a gush of many streams,
A song of many birds,
And every wish and longing seems
Lulled to a numbered flow of words,—
Listen! Oh, listen!
Here ever hum the golden bees
Underneath full-blossomed trees,
At once with glowing fruit and flowers crowned;—

So smooth the sand, the yellow sand,
That thy keel will not grate as it touches the land;
All around with a slumberous sound,
The singing waves slide up the strand,
And there, where the smooth, wet pebbles be
The waters gurgle longingly,
As if they fain would seek the shore,
To be at rest from the ceaseless roar,
To be at rest forevermore,—
Forevermore.
Thus, on Life’s gloomy sea,
Heareth the marinere
Voices sweet, from far and near,
Ever singing in his ear,
“Here is rest and peace for thee!”
