Asking the Relevant Clinical Questions Evidence-based nursing is a process founded on the collection, interpretation, appraisal, and integration of Essay writing essay help: writing essay help

Asking the Relevant Clinical Questions
Evidence-based nursing is a process founded on the collection, interpretation, appraisal, and integration of valid, clinically significant, and applicable research. It is not about developing new knowledge or validating existing knowledge, but rather translating existing evidence so that it can be applied to clinical decision making. This process starts with formulating a sound PICO question. PICO is a format for developing a good clinical research question prior to starting a review or research. It is a mnemonic used to describe the four elements of a sound clinical foreground question.

Scenarios:

#1 A nurse in the PACU is interested in ways to decrease the use of pain medication in post-op patients. She’s wondering if classical music or guided imagery might be efficacious.

#2 A 17-year-old African American woman, just diagnosed with hepatitis B, has been taking acetaminophen for headaches. Her mother has heard that acetaminophen can cause liver problems, and she asks you if her daughter should continue taking the drug for her headaches, considering her hep-b diagnosis.

#3 You are on a hospital committee exploring best practices in inpatient oncology nursing. The first question to come before the committee is, “how can we improve patients’ sleep quality and quantity without resorting to sleep medication?” The committee decides to explore relaxation techniques (e.g., massage; music), noise reduction, bed/pillow comfort, and ambient temperature changes. Your assignment is to find the best practices to reduce noise levels on the unit.

#4 A 53-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis wants to possibly change her medication to short-term low-dose corticosteroids instead of NSAIDS, which are upsetting her stomach. Will the corticosteroids be as effective?

#5 Jeff, a smoker of more than 30 years, has tried to quit unsuccessfully in the past. A friend of his recently quit with acupuncture. He wonders if he should try it.

Instructions:

Choose one (1) clinical scenario above, and answer the following questions:
What is evidence-based nursing practice and why is it important?
What is the PICO process?
Formulate a well defined clinical question that will yield the most relevant and best evidence.
Describe the background of the question
Present the question using PICOT format
Indicate what will be the best study to answer the clinical question.

PLEASE USE THE TOPIC: How Social Media Is Targeting Journalists? The New York Times just released something about this, essay help free

PLEASE USE THE TOPIC: How Social Media Is Targeting Journalists?

The New York Times just released something about this, may be useful????

Step 1 of the Senior Capstone Project will require you to write a comprehensive project proposal memorandum to your instructor. This memo should be viewed by you as your formal request for approval of your idea for a Senior Capstone Project.

The proposal memo should accomplish two main tasks:

provide background information
argue for the viability of your idea
You want to convince your professor that you know:

what the scope of your intended project is
who your audience is and what their needs are
how you will approach the project and the research
how you will complete the project within the given time frame
Your memo should be 2–3 pages long, single-spaced.

Project Proposal Memorandum Sections

Your proposal memo should have the following sections:

introduction
statement of the problem or research question
audience analysis
scope of the research
research methods
timeline
Here are general descriiptions of the content that should be included in each section:

Introduction

Key Idea: The introduction is addressed to the project proposal memo’s audience: your instructor.

What does your instructor have to know in order to understand and appreciate your proposal? Include background information, context, and definitions.

If your instructor is likely unfamiliar with your topic, include basic descriiptions or definitions. If you think your instructor is fully familiar with your topic, use this section to establish common knowledge.

Statement of the Problem or Research Question

Key Idea: Your statement section should be brief.

In a sentence or two, state the concern that your project will address, the problem it will solve, or the question it will answer.

Audience Analysis

Key Idea: The audience analysis should be your comprehensive analysis of the audience you intend to address in your Senior Capstone Project.

The audience for the project proposal memo itself is your professor, but the target audience for your final Senior Capstone Project will be a professional demographic that you must define. You will do that research for this memo.

For example, suppose you want to prepare a research report for an advocacy group, a research center, a business, an association, a foundation, or some other group.

Describe the following:

the organization that will support or benefit from your research
name(s) and title(s) of people at that organization who will read your report
secondary audiences who may read/benefit from your report
possible publication homes for your research report
Include a paragraph or two to demonstrate that you have analyzed your audiences and their needs with respect to your project.

Include any of the following information, if relevant:

your audience’s professional background
their role(s) in the organization
demographic information
their attitude toward the subject
possible persuasive strategies you will have to use
power issues
control over resources to effect solutions or strategies proposed in your final research report
Scope of the Research

Key Idea: The scope of research helps to focus your research and writing by showing

the smaller units of research (subtopics) that make up your general topic
the issues surrounding these subtopics
current and possible areas of research
your foundational assumptions about the topic and subtopics
Write a paragraph to describe the scope of your research (i.e., the subtopics you will cover under your main topic). Alternatively, simply write a list of questions that your research will answer.

Read enough background material on your subject so that you reflect on the following procedural issues that are typical for any project:

1.The broader perspective and more specific possible areas for your research

You may be interested in the way technology is changing childhood, but then decide to focus your study on one specific technology, how that technology is used in the home or school, or a more specific age range of child development. For this course, a more targeted area for the project will help you to focus your efforts.

2. The most important, serious, vexing, or significant problem(s) that your project will address

Money, time, and other resources are scarce. If you have to choose between solving a problem that affects people very little and one that could help people a great deal, think about choosing the project that will have more impact.

3. The most important research others have conducted that allowed you to build on that work

You don’t want to reinvent the wheel through your work, so make sure you know where your project’s issues currently stand in terms of research, policy discussion, regulation, or laws. If you are writing a speech, for example, you will want to cite the most important sources, show those ideas, and build on them in the speech. If you are doing a training program, make sure you know how much and what kind of training can reasonably occur, based on previous similar programs. If you are doing a research project, look at the conclusions of published research articles to see where the authors suggest future research should be done.

4. The assumptions you are making as the foundation for your investigation

By reflecting on your basic assumptions, you will get a better sense of whether you are in harmony with your intended audience(s) or whether you will have to persuade them. For example, you may see changing laws as a way to fix a problem, whereas other people think laws will be ineffectual.

Check to see if your assumptions are correct. You may assume that the major impact of what you are studying influences all Americans, whereas the population affected lives in only some parts of the country.

You will also want to be very clear that you know who is actually responsible for solving a problem. In other words, who has jurisdiction—individuals, parents, school boards, corporations, local or state or national governments, regulatory agencies?

Research Methods

Key Idea: You know what you must research and why after completing the audience analysis and scope of work; now focus on the how.

Describe the strategies you will use to find information from primary sources and secondary sources that will help you answer your research question and fulfill your scope.

Consider the following:

How will you locate information about your topic?
Can you use the same procedures others have used, or should you change them a little, or should you use new strategies to find information about the topic?
For example, if you are creating a business proposal, ask yourself whether there are people you should interview or survey to gain insights into the problem you want to address or the solution you want to offer.

Think about the primary research you can do (interviews, questionnaires, experiences) that will be especially relevant to this particular situation and add to what is known.

List the names of experts you should consult or specific sources you will read. Be sure to consider a range of sources, including advocacy groups, research centers, think tanks, and foundations.

Keep in mind that you are conducting research to gather information and data that will help you meet your central project goal.

Timeline

Key Idea: You want to convince your professor that you have a clear idea of how to complete the tasks you are going to undertake within the allotted time frame.

Create a timeline for the subtasks of your project. You might begin by listing the weekly dates and itemizing the assignments as they are due. Then add in your time for information gathering, drafting, and revision. Alternatively, you might create a Gantt chart with the help of creating a Gantt chart with the help of Creating and Using a Gantt Chart in our classroom’s Course Resources.

Project Proposal Memorandum Format

Step 2: Annotated Bibliography Memo

Overview
Beginning the Research Process
Best Sources for the Annotated Bibliography
Annotated Bibliography Memorandum Format

Overview

Step 2 of the Senior Capstone Project is an annotated bibliography, which is a list of sources used in writing a paper, supplemented with descriiptive information about the sources. The purpose of an annotation is to inform your reader about the usefulness and credibility of a source you consulted in the development of your project. It also shows that you know the traditions, the experts, and the major players in the subject matter of your paper.

No matter what type of Senior Capstone Project you choose or what your topic is, people have been talking and writing about it, probably for years, and your job is to figure out how to join—and make a worthwhile contribution to—that conversation.

As you do your reading and research for the annotated bibliography, keep the project proposal memo you created in step 1 nearby. It is a reminder of your central research questions or areas of investigation.

Remember not to stray from your approved project area, because your professor may ask you to rewrite the proposal to reflect what you now propose to do in your project.

Annotated Bibliographies in the Workplace

Although your employers may not specifically request an annotated bibliography for your work projects, you should assume that they expect you to be thoroughly knowledgeable about a subject before you try to contribute relevant ideas.

You can draw on the same information-gathering strategies you learn in developing an annotated bibliography. If you follow this method, you will know that you have obtained the best information available about the subject.

For an overview of the process involved in writing an annotated bibliography, take a look at the following graphics.

Your Task

Now you are ready to begin writing your own annotated bibliography. In general, you need to:

Choose your sources. You will need to locate at least eight sources for your annotated bibliography memo, from at least 3 different source types. No more than two of your sources can be from interviews. No more than three of any other type of source may be counted toward the minimum number of eight references (although you certainly may use more sources). These eight sources must include peer-reviewed scholarly or professional journal articles.
The bulk of your research should come from the UMGC library’s databases. Your sources must be authoritative and credible primary resources. Therefore, they must include peer-reviewed scholarly or professional journal articles from the UMGC library’s databases. To review the characteristics and differences between the primary and secondary sources that must be among your selections.
Besides those journal articles and the personal interviews, the sources may include general circulation newspapers, and general circulation and trade magazines, books, manuals, emails, and web sources. Note a newspaper article found on the web is classified as a newspaper article; web sources are those found originally on the web. Never refer to an entire website as a source. Be specific about which information you used on that website. Use the library’s guide to reference formats here or the handouts in our classroom’s Writing Resources.

Review the items. Examine the items and choose those that provide a wide variety of perspectives on your topic. Article abstracts are helpful in this process.
Write the citations and annotations. When writing your annotations, the complete citation should always come first and the annotation follows. Depending on the type of annotated bibliography you are writing, you will want to include:
The purpose of the work
A summary of its content
Information about the author(s)
Its relevance to the topic
Beginning the Research Process

This section will give you an overview of how you must accomplish the steps to researching your Senior Capstone Project.

Your first task will be to get a general sense of

the names of people and organizations involved with your topic
a timeline of significant events related to your topic
General or Background Information

An excellent resource for getting started on a research project is our discipline is the Encyclopedia of Communication and Information (2002). You can locate the encyclopedia through the UMGC library’s Research Guide for COMM 495.

Go to the UMGC library’s Research Guide for COMM 495.
Scroll down to “Background Information” and select the link for the Encyclopedia of Communication and Information.
Once you have reached the encyclopedia’s website, be sure you select the option to search within “all volumes,” and then enter the search term you want to find. The search term can be a person or organization you have found in the research for your project proposal memo, the topic of your project, or the name of a theory you are thinking of using for your project. Use the Encyclopedia of Communication and Information as a source to add to your list of names and organizations, as well as to your timeline.
Another encyclopedia you might use through the UMGC library: 21st Century Communication: A Reference Handbook (2009). This source offers detailed histories of how ideas have developed and been applied, and the bibliography at the end of each article will lead you to additional sources of good information.
A third encyclopedia that you might use from the library’s holdings is the Encyclopedia of Communication Theory (2009), which explains the communication theories that you may need in your research.
Timeline

To indicate your mastery of your subject, you should prepare a timeline about it. Theories and research often emanate from events outside the realm of academia or research organizations. For example, with communication studies, you will want to know when the technologies through which people communicate were invented. You’ll also want to know the dates when famous researchers were actively engaged with your topic. Research typically builds on previous work, so you should have a clear notion of who influenced whom.

A good annotated bibliography shows that you understand when a particular research topic began to be studied, and why. Continue to refine your timeline throughout the course of your research. Your professor will not necessarily ask you to include a timeline in your annotated bibliography, but he or she will want to see, through your choice of resources and your comments about them, that you understand when, where, and why the texts were produced.

Recent Newspaper/Popular Journal/Cable News/Website Sources

You might have read about your research topic in People magazine or the New York Times or heard about it through a link you saw on Facebook directing you to a program on National Public Radio. Although these kinds of writing are unacceptable for an annotated bibliography, they often give you the names of researchers, organizations, and recent studies that you can use for your annotated bibliography. When a communication subject makes it into the realm of current media, you can assume that the topic is of at least some current interest and importance, which is good. You will then want to “ground” that current topic in research, studies, and reports that have led to that news story.

If you are writing about past events and want to find newspaper stories related to those events, check the UMGC library’s Research Guide for Communication Studies: Resources, which has archives of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Baltimore Sun. Use these sources to put your study into historical context, to add to your timeline, and to find the names of scholars and researchers who wrote about your topics in the past.

Remember, however, that newspaper stories—old or new—generally are not authoritative enough to be in your annotated bibliography.

Finishing Your Broad Search

After you have looked at these encyclopedias and recent or old news stories, revisit your project proposal. If you find that your focus has changed through the research process, be sure to alert your professor. You may need to refine and rewrite your research question.

Best Sources for the Annotated Bibliography

In this section, you will learn how to select good sources for your annotated bibliography.

Databases

Communication is such a broad and varied field that good sources of information come from many places. From your preliminary readings, you should have the names of people and organizations who have written about your topic.

The most reliable academic places to find additional research and writing on your topic are library databases, such as the Research Databases in the UMGC library.

Tip: Need help with doing database searches? Try this library tutorial.

Another good source for scholarly articles is the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. This publication’s articles are vetted by experts; and the journal itself is published by the International Communication Association, a well-respected communication studies and research organization. JCMC articles are complete and free to everyone.

Evaluating Articles and Books

When you get a list of articles from a database search, you must find the best articles for your annotated bibliography. Use the following criteria to guide you. In addition, make sure you have narrowed the scope of your project—by time period, kinds of people, locations, and so forth—so you know which information is relevant.

If you are doing a social science project, be sure you articulate what you know about the scope of the research you are doing. The scope of research will include definitional, procedural, and historical issues, as well as the kinds of data that will help the writer make an argument. Writers/researchers must keep the entire potential scope in mind as they begin to gather information.

Here are some criteria for judging the value and relevance of previous research:

This checklist from UMGC’s Effective Writing Center also can help you evaluate the authority and credibility of the articles that you’ve found.

Also, check the list of experts you generated in your broad search to see if any of them have published books you can borrow from UMGC’s library or your local library. UMGC’s library is constantly expanding its collection of books available in electronic form.

If any of the books intrigue you or seem particularly relevant to your work, consider purchasing them at local stores or online. Indeed, you can usually get a very good idea about the quality of a book by locating it on a website like Amazon or Barnes

Critical Thinking: Scope of the Modern Company In this assignment, we looked at technology-based industries and the management of innovation. For this week’s assignment, review Case 14 Eni SpA: The Corporate Strategy of an International Energy Major, (pages are attached). Remember: A case study is a puzzle to be solved, so before reading and answering the specific case study questions, develop your proposed solution by following these five steps: 1. Read the case study to identify the key issues and underlying issues. These issues are the principles and concepts of the course module, which apply to the situation described in the case study. 2. Record the facts from the case study which are relevant to the principles and concepts of the module. The case may have extraneous information not relevant to the current course module. Your ability to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information is an important aspect of case analysis, as it will inform the focus of your answers. 3. Describe in some detail the actions that would address or correct the situation. 4. Consider how you would support your solution with examples from experience or current real-life examples or cases from textbooks. 5. Complete this initial analysis and then read the discussion questions. Typically, you will already have the answers to the questions but with a broader consideration. At this point, you can add the details and/or analytical tools required to solve the case. Case Study Questions: 1. Evaluate Eni’s corporate strategy in terms of its alignment with the characteristics and requirements of its industry environment and its resources and capabilities. 2. Looking ahead over Eni’s next four-year planning period (2019-22), what changes in Eni’s corporate strategy would you recommend? 3. How should Eni allocate its resources across its different businesses and between different geographical areas? In particular: a. Should Eni continue to focus most of its capital investment on its upstream business? b. Should Eni divest (i) its chemicals business, and (ii) its engineering, construction, and oilfield services subsidiary (Saipem)? c. Should Eni continue with its vertically integrated strategy in natural gas? d. Should Eni invest more heavily in renewable energy sources (e.g., wind power, solar power, and geothermal power)? 4. Evaluate the recent changes to the organizational structure that Mr. Descalzi has introduced. What further organizational and management changes would you recommend? The paper should meet the following requirements: • Be 4 to 5 pages in length, which does not include the required title and reference pages, which are never a part of the content minimum requirements. • Use APA style guidelines Ed7. • 10% is the maximum plagiarism percentage. • Support the submission with at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles. • Should write introduction, body with highlight title before every paragraph of a question’s solution, conclusion, and references with APA ed7.

Appraisal Case Study: Managers must monitor and help improve the performance of employees to meet organizational objectives, goals, and response to unforeseen circumstances such as an increase or decrease in sales demand. A manager will often help improve business processes, including the performance management plan. Scenario: Malek is a member of a three-person management team for a small business merging with another organization. Both companies have experienced poor performance from staff, a decline in sales, and low morale. The newly appointed Chief Operations Officer (COO) has asked Malek to create a performance management appraisal system to improve poor performance, issues with decreased sales, and low employee morale. Although Malek knows the other managers on his team, he is not familiar with how the managers in the other organization have approached performance management. Malek is also unsure about the experiences of his new co-managers with recording performance management and what their attitudes to collecting this kind of data might be. Putting yourself in the place of Malek, and based upon the information provided in this scenario, address the following: • What are ways that Malek can ensure alignment from managers in both organizations about data collection for the purposes of performance management? • How can Malek set goals and reinforce those goals with employees, specifically since individuals are coming together from two organizations? • What are some potential approaches that Malek could take to ensure that performance appraisals are reliable and consistent across the new organization? • What are key performance indicators (KPIs), or methods of measurement will you use to track performance? Ensure to integrate sufficient support from scholarly resources throughout the assignment. Use suitable headings and subheadings to organize the work in an appropriate manner. The paper should meet the following requirements: • Be 4 to 6 pages in length, which does not include the required title and reference pages, which are never a part of the content minimum requirements.

AE1 (Argument Essay 1) Using the guidelines set forth in PCI Chapter 5, write a 500-word Argumentative Essay that scholarship essay help: scholarship essay help

AE1 (Argument Essay 1)

Using the guidelines set forth in PCI Chapter 5, write a 500-word Argumentative Essay that incorporates synthesis of at least two sources for support. Both sources must be from PCI. Ideally, these will be the same articles you wrote about for PN1, but if you would like to switch articles, that is acceptable.

Please note that the primary purpose of this essay is not merely to review these sources, but instead to create your own argumentative stance on the topic, which means you should assert your own argument about the topic you’ve been exploring. Research should be used to support your argument or to show the opposing points you will refute.

You should take care to avoid logical fallacies and inconsistencies, as pointed out in PCI Chapter 5, and you should take care to include the components of a well-developed argument, also as pointed out in Chapter 5. Here is a VERY HELPFUL OUTLINE that can help you structure your essay: Outline for Argument Essays.docx

You should include at least one long (block) quote and one short quote, and a works cited page, all of them properly formatted.
Double-space the paper, and use the proper MLA heading, pagination, and formatting. Example of a properly-formatted paper: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_general_format.html
Word Count: Please do not go more than 50 words over or under the word count for any paper.
Grammar: All essays should make use of correct grammar and punctuation.
A note on the thesis and content: All essays should contain a clear, debatable thesis. All quotes and information should be in the paper to support or introduce the thesis, as shown in the outline for PN2. Be careful not to confuse a thesis statement with a forecasting statement. A thesis sentence encapsulates the main idea of the essay, whereas a forecasting statement indicates the structure your paper will follow and what it will discuss. A thesis is required; a forecasting statement is not required, though a forecasting statement can enhance the paper. As well, the thesis and forecast can be combined into one statement. Although your book states that a thesis statement may ask a question, for the purposes of this class, in which your writing is driven by analysis and/or argument, your thesis should be an assertion, not a question. You should bold your thesis statement in your paper. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of a letter grade.
As, well, your essay should include topic sentences. That is to say that each body paragraph (not the introduction and conclusion) should include a sentence that conveys the main idea of the paragraph and supports the thesis. These topic sentences should also be bolded in order to avoid the deduction of a letter grade.
Essays should have original titles. Do not use the tile of a work you read as the title of your paper or title your paper something generic, such as “Argument Essay 1.” Do not underline, bold, use quotations around, or in any other way embellish your title visually. The fact that it is centered at the top of the essay indicates that it is the title.
Word count does not include headers, works cited page, or other material that is not part of the main text of the essay.
A note on organization: Papers should contain multiple paragraphs, and I should be able to look at each paragraph in your paper and clearly see how it supports the thesis.
A note on style: All papers should be written in an engaging style that promotes human interest. It is okay and encouraged to use the first person pronouns in my class, though, as a rule, this is something you should check with each professor. As well, though you must have a certain number of academic sources, you are also permitted to supplement with additional sources, such as quotes from songs, friends, family members, movies, novels, poems, etc.
Important: Do not use any Webster’s Dictionary Definitions, define terms or provide information your audience already knows. These tactics are filler and waste space that could be used to advance argument.
Note: Scroll down the page at this link to “A Work in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection” to see how to do works cited entries for essays from your textbook: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_works_cited_page_books.html
