Sociology 101.12 Term Essay Assignment

This Assignment is based on the following quote from the essay by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, entitled “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception” (2002).

“The withering of imagination and spontaneity in the consumer of culture today need not be traced back to psychological mechanisms. The products themselves, especially the most characteristic, the sound film, cripple those faculties through their objective makeup. They are so constructed that their adequate comprehension requires a quick, observant, knowledgeable cast of mind but positively debars the spectator from thinking, if he is not to miss the fleeting facts. This kind of alertness is so ingrained that it does not even need to be activated in particular cases, while still repressing the powers of imagination. Anyone who is so absorbed by the world of the film, by gesture, image, and word, that he or she is unable to supply that which would have made it a world in the first place, does not need to be entirely transfixed by the special operations of the machinery at the moment of the performance. The required qualities of attention have become so familiar from other films and other culture products already known to him or her that they appear automatically. The power of industrial society is imprinted on people once and for all. The products of the culture industry are such that they can be alertly consumed even in a state of distraction. But each one is a model of the gigantic economic machinery, which, from the first, keeps everyone on their toes, both at work and in the leisure time which resembles it. In any sound film or any radio broadcast something is discernible which cannot be attributed as a social effect to any one of them, but to all together. Each single manifestation of the culture industry inescapably reproduces human beings as what the whole has made them. And all its agents, from the producer to the women’s organizations, are on the alert to ensure that the simple reproduction of mind does not lead on to the expansion of mind” (100).

From “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception” in The Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, Stanford University Press (2002 [1944]) pp. 94 – 136.

The Assignment:

On the basis of our discussions in class (as well as the entire quote), briefly describe in your own words what the authors mean by “The withering of imagination and spontaneity in the consumer of culture today…”, and why they think this is happening.

Then: Briefly describe one or two particular examples of creative artistic culture that you are familiar with (in the area of Music, Art, Dance, Literature, Architecture, Film, etc.). These should be particular examples, one song, or one movie for example, rather than generalities like “music today” or “recent movies”) Then: On the basis of your examples, consider A) to what extent the authors’ fears could apply, (that is, what support can you find in your examples for their claims) and B) the extent to which you think their fears do apply (given this support – if you find any – are their concerns justified).

Conclude your essay by considering whether contemporary creative culture could or should contribute to what Adorno and Horkheimer refer to as “the expansion of mind”. If so, how this might happen, given the authors’ concerns. If not, (if contemporary creative culture should not contribute to “the expansion of mind”) what is the purpose of creative artistic culture today?
Due: Monday, November 15th, 2021 – In class (Note that this date is later than the one originally listed in the course outline)

Length: Maximum of 4 Double-spaced, typed pages, 12 pt. Font.

Format: The paper should be handed in typed and stapled. The pages are to be numbered and the assignment should conform to the MLA manual of style. A complete descriiption of this style and an example of a student essay in this format can be found at this link:

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_sample_paper.html

Late submissions will only be accepted with prior permission and will only be permitted under extraordinary circumstances. External sources are not required but if used (see note below) must be properly cited following the MLA format.

One final Note: You should not need any further external sources to do this assignment well. The temptation is often to use what others have to say on the topic as “the answer” to the questions being asked. But in this case, the good “answer” or response, is to reflect on you own thinking about the types of popular culture you enjoy, in terms suggested by Adorno and Horkheimer, in order to evaluate what they are saying (and to “evaluate” in no way implies you must agree with them. But if you don’t, use your example to fully explain why).

You will view a movie of your choice and write a 5-6 page, 12-pt Times New Roman or Courier New font, double-spaced typed, detailed paper that applies interpersonal communication concepts learned in the course to situations revealed in the movie. (We will this project AND various films in class; some examples include “The Way,” one of Dobson’s favorites; “The Intouchables,” “The Kid with a Bike,” “Love in Another Language,” to name but a few). In this paper, you will discuss what you’ve read in your textbook and what we’ve talked about in class in relation to your film. Do not give the story plot, but demonstrate your understanding of interpersonal communication, relationships, and concepts of the film. You will need to refer to situations in the film to guide your discussion of interpersonal theory, but realize that I’m looking for an analysis paper of interpersonal communication from the film, not a film review. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to identify interpersonal communication concepts and provide a detailed analysis of those concepts and how they are demonstrated in the film. You can also add an analysis of how communication could have been improved and what might have occurred if certain behavior demonstrated in the film had continued rather than stopped or stopped rather than continued. You are encouraged to concisely apply your own observations of life and situations to your analysis (such as situations that you have observed that are similar as one(s) revealed in the film, the similarities, and differences with the situations and how they resolved, and the analysis of both situations to the concept/theory you are applying and discussing in that section of the paper). This paper will be graded on how well it meets the above criteria, editing for direct and in-depth analysis, grammatical accuracy, expression of ideas, and synthesis of the material. The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and no less than 5 full pages (only 1-inch margins on each page).

Bubba’s Burgers

During the past year Bubba’s Burgers introduced a new dessert product into its Canadian market area. The product had already passed all the internal hurdles including focus groups and operational analysis, such as time it takes to make and equipment constraints. The next step was to see how well the product would be received in the marketplace. In particular, Bubba’s Burgers’ Vice President for Production, Stephanie Linwood, was interested in estimating the mean number of orders for this dessert per 1,000 customer transactions. A random sample of 142 stores throughout Canada was selected. Store managers tracked the number of dessert orders per 1,000 transactions during a two-week trial period. See the file Bubba’s Burgers

1. Based on these sample data construct and interpret a 95% confidence interval estimate for the mean number of dessert orders per 1,000 orders.

2. Suppose that the Stephanie is not happy with the margin of error associated with the confidence interval estimate you found in question 1 and wants the margin of error to be no greater than /-6 dessert orders per 1,000 customer orders. To meet this objective, how many more stores should be included in the sample? Alternatively, if Stephanie doesn’t wish to increase the sample size, what other option is available to reduce the margin of error? Discuss the pros and cons of both approaches.
