Organizations are constantly performing a balancing act. A human resource department of a Fortune 500 company had to keep track of changes in the corporate structure and the people who filled the senior executive positions. For my own information, I kept a copy of every change to the Table of Organizations that was made for almost twenty years. The company was considered a conservative company with only three significant products servicing a single metropolitan area. Yet, several times a year, there would be major or minor changes in its structure as it adapted to the external environment, internal politics, and changes in how it viewed itself, its mission, and culture. The Table of Organization was the skeleton key to understanding the corporation’s history. Every change had a story behind it. Much, perhaps most, of the story was hidden from me. But the course of evolution over time was there for all to see.
