• Benefits of motorcycle and bicycle patrol
Discretionary Use of Police Authority
Myth of Full Enforcement
• Police do not have the resources or desire to enforce all laws
• Not all laws are enforced impartially
• Political and legal reasons for denying the use of discretion
• Cannot have patrol without the discretionary use of police authority
Attempts to Define Discretion
• The two sides of criminal law: formality (found in the statute books) and reality (found in practice)
• When they differ, the reality prevails
• Use of discretion one of the major challenges facing the police today
Determinants of Officer Discretion
• Seriousness of offense
• Officer’s attitude
• Citizen’s attitude
Pros, Cons, and Politics of Discretionary Authority
• Advantages of discretion
• Disadvantages of discretion
• Politics (ambiguity of state legislative commands contributes to police discretion)
A Related Function: Traffic
• Strong link between patrol function and traffic control
• Traffic stops account for about half of the contact Americans have with the police
• How an officer conducts traffic stop can affect someone’s view of the police for years
Enforcement of Traffic Laws: Triumph and Trouble
• Traffic stops a source of friction between officers and citizens
• Levels of enforcement differ among departments
• Strict traffic enforcement can negatively impact police-community relations
• Deterrent effects of traffic citations are questionable
Traffic Crash Investigation
• Traffic accident vs. traffic crash/collision
• Officers must understand process of investigation and cite the guilty party
Pursuit of the “Phantom” Driver
• Strong public support for police focus on hit-and-run (“phantom”) drivers
The Patrol Lifeline: Dispatchers and Communications
• Seen by police as “unsung heroes”
• Generally work in centralized communications center
• Often the first people the public contacts when emergency assistance is required

In your Signature Assignment, you will apply your profiling skills during an investigation. Imagine that you have been hired essay help online: essay help online
In your Signature Assignment, you will apply your profiling skills during an investigation. Imagine that you have been hired by the FBI to work as a profiler. In this assignment, put your skills to the test by developing a PowerPoint presentation that delivers your findings to the FBI agents working on the case. You may use any information you have developed from previous assignments or create new information (e.g., suspect impressions report and summary identified information pertaining to demographics, physical characteristics, possible motive). You may use that information in your Signature Assignment. However, your goal for this assignment is to ensure that use your PowerPoint presentation to conveyed to the FBI that you have developed a solid criminal profile based on the following:
Identify the crime and crime scene in a well-organized manner (with specific details).
Indicate any physical and emotional attributes of the suspect (e.g., height, weight, piercings, markings). Is the suspect known to “fly off the handle”, or does he/she have a history of property destruction? If so, how do you know this–who provided you with this information and are they credible?
Identify your possible suspect and present rationale (e.g., What led you to this hypothesis? What physical or other identifying information connected the victims to the alleged suspect? What geographic considerations were factored into your hypothesis?).
Identify information about the victims in the case. How many, were there similarities? If so, what where they? Are the victims connected to each other in some way (e.g., work, friends, school, etc.)?
Determine the possible motivation for the criminal committing the crime (i.e., childhood history, mental illness, significant life event).
Include any other relevant history, such as prior arrests or hospitalizations.
Be sure your presentation demonstrates that you have developed a solid theory of the suspect and that you understand the crime that was committed, as well as the victims associated with the crime and any additional information. Specifically, you must accurately define the connections that exist among your crime scene analysis, victim information, and key findings to develop your profile. The goal is to provide the FBI with the knowledge you have to help the agents solve the crime. Your presentation should include a summary that explains the crime, crime scene, and victim(s). The summary is intended to provide details that lead to your analysis; therefore, they should reflect scholarship and application of the theories learned.
Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as “speaker notes” for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.
Support your presentation with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

As a law enforcement officer, going on a call for service is never the same. No matter the service call, the incident will always have a difference in details and outcomes. You must write everything down. You may go to a call for service at 3 pm and not have a chance to type the report until 11 pm that night. A lot can happen between that time, and the possibility of you remembering it all is unlikely. As criminal justice professionals, not only must we be professional, we also must write professionally, meaning in a clear, concise manner.
Review the video of a missing person call for service. Document what you believe is important in a word document that will act as your notebook in the field. After you document your notes, type out your incident report in the discussion post, and upload your “notes” in a word document. Remember, your report must be in chronological order and documented so that anyone can read it and know what has occurred.

Edward T. Hall was an American cross-cultural researcher who is known for describing high and low context cultural factors. He also defined two systems of time in the world: monochronic and polychronic time. Monochronic time is typified by German, Swiss, Scandinavian, and American/Canadian culture. These low-context Western cultures tend to concentrate on one thing at a time and stay on time. Polychronic time, present in high-context cultures like China, Japan, Mexico, and Middle Eastern countries, is characterized by looser time schedules and taking time to develop deeper relationships prior to conducting business.

(1) Open the outline you submitted last week. Revise it, if needed, using your instructor’s feedback as a guide. Save the changes and, if you’re able, print it out. It’s always best to work from a printed copy.
(2) Then, create a new MS Word document named E1_YourLastName_YourFirstName. Set up the formatting to match APA standards. (USLO 5.1)
To create your essay, take each point in your outline and turn it into one or two complete sentences. Remember to take any feedback provided by your instructor for your outline assignment and apply it to your essay draft.
Your essay should at least 1000 words long (and should not exceed 1200 words). It should follow all conventions of grammar, style, structure, and organization discussed in this course.
Remember, too, how this paper should be structured. You should have an introductory paragraph that introduces the reader to the topic and ends with a thesis statement (if you need to, review the Creating an Effective Introductory Paragraph in your e-text). Then, your essay should have several body paragraphs, each making one point the directly relates to the thesis statement. Finally, wrap up your paper with a concluding paragraph (if you need to, review Creating an Effective Conclusion for a Multi-Paragraph Essay in your e-text).

Ms. Weller American Literature December 2021
“We all came out of Gogol’s overcoat” (84):
A Namesake Rumination
My life is vastly different from the lives of Gogol, Sonia, Ashoke, and Ashima Ganguli. However, there are moments in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake that bring me to tears – moments in which I can’t help but consider my own experiences and emotions. As a teenager, I, too, felt “irritated by [my] parents’ perpetual fear of disaster” (159), wanting to “tune out their concerns or pleas” (112). Now, as a mother, the thought of my son growing up to “wave and drive off, pretending not to hear” (161) or being “willing to go on vacation with someone else’s parents but not see his own” (155) breaks my heart. The desire to spend time with my own aging parents and to “remember it always” (200) pulls at me daily.
I’d like you to explore the way Lahiri uses these very specific characters, settings, and poetic descriiptions to make universal connections to her readers’ lives. Your analysis of a brief passage will serve as a jumping off point for a reflection on your own thoughts and experiences. To write a Rumination …
● Choose a significant passage from The Namesake – between six and ten lines. These should be lines that resonate with you. They may remind you of something, or they may attract you because of the newness of the idea they present. They should be lines that have stayed with you.
● Explain these lines within the context of the book as you would in a normal analytical paragraph or essay. Give a quick explanation of the context, cite the text properly using a block quote, and analyze its meaning within the novel. Where do your chosen lines come from, why are they significant, and how do they fit into the larger themes of the story? What about the language in your chosen lines is particularly striking or unusual? Which literary devices is Lahiri using and why?
● Ruminate, think, and respond personally to the lines you have selected. Why does this
passage resonate with you? What connections can you find between your chosen lines and your own experience of the world? Think of this section as a chance to reflect on specific ideas or images that your passage contains.
● Your rumination will be in first person, and you should write about specific experiences and thoughts that relate to your chosen part of the text. You may stray far from the book, writing descriiptively and with great detail, showing rather than telling, but be sure to …
● Reconnect your own explorations to the novel itself in your last paragraph. Bring closure to your rumination; don’t simply repeat your earlier thoughts. Leave your readers with a thought that they can then ruminate about.
Skills I’m looking for:
● a specific, original title
● a block quote incorporated into the beginning of your paper (indented, single spaced,
with MLA citation)
● at least one paragraph of close analysis of this quote – look specifically at Lahiri’s word
choice, structure, syntax, imagery, figurative language, etc. in order to make a claim about
how this passage fits in with the rest of the novel or affects the reader
● at least one paragraph of personal reflection about a specific moment from your life –
you may use dialogue, and imagery to put readers in a particular moment with you, or
you may use a more complex reflection to string a series of events in your life together
● a conclusion that clearly demonstrates the parallels between your personal reflection and the passage from Lahiri’s novel
● No more than 3 double-spaced pages in 12 pt. Times/Times New Roman font
● Analysis paragraph due in class for peer editing (10 point homework grade): Wednesday, December 8th
● Completed draft due for peer editing (10 point homework grade): Wednesday, December 15th
● Final copy due to Turnitin: (100 point writing assignment grade): Wednesday, December 22nd

Please note that there are two samples of this assignment (from previous students) under “Additional Resources” in week 4.
For this assignment, compile a portfolio of samples of the three types of written business correspondence we have practiced so far: one letter, one business email, and one memo. Revise the the ones you have already written for the course, perfecting them based on feedback you received, or (if you prefer) start fresh and write up new ones based on what you have learned so far.
In addition, if at all possible, revise each so that the audience and purpose for each fits your current job, a job you held previously, or a job you see yourself having in five years. Having an actual audience in mind always helps us revise and refine a communication; “just exercises” only take us so far.
Length: Please study the examples of each type of correspondence in our text to gauge the appropriate length for each. Make sure you have a substantial sample in each category by making sure each is made of appropriate components, paragraph breaks as necessary, logical stages (of appeals, requests, information or a reply), etc.
Submit all three in one Word document or PDF, with your name, our class info. and the date in the header (no need for a separate title page).
Make sure the you label the document with your name so it will appear saved on a desk top as yours rather than “assignment” or some such (this helps).
Please do not show previous versions or track changes/edits.

RE: REQUEST FOR EXTENDED WEEKEND HOURS
As noted in the Chancellor’s message, the Library will close its doors to visitors at 6 p.m and only open for a limited duration over the weekends. The Library is a critical campus service for students and teachers, and that limited access to the facility during the weekends has a substantial effect on everyone. From the recent trends, students and other users have demonstrated higher access demands beyond the official operational hours. We appreciate the efforts by the faculty staff to offer remote teaching whenever convenient. In this regard, my request is to have the facility open for extended periods over the weekends to accommodate this growing need.
In this proposal, faculty will have card access to the facility from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to drop off scanned course reserve materials and pick up books. Accordingly, the Library should remain open to all other users until the closing time of 5 p.m. To facilitate remote education, Library staff will scan and put sections of personal copies of books or our print collections on course reserves. Numerous publishers and databases are making their collections available at this time of need. We will provide links to such resources on the Library’s website for Remote Resources and Services. Also, the changing protocols demand that we adapt our operations as well. For instance, the BookTrust is now assessing its rules, processes, and service standards in order to prepare for the possibility of delivering emergency services. As a response, we may provide guidance on how to make content available and accessible to students at all times, including weekends. Cooperation from the Librarian and other library employees is highly appreciated.

Dear My Future Employees
RE: Dan Pink’s ideas
Hi all. I want to share some exciting elements regarding motivation with you. The elements include mastery, purpose, and autonomy (Pink, 2009). A study conducted showed that these elements are essential in motivating people intrinsically.
I would like you to note that most people want freedom in their lives and want to master their craft. Besides, people love participating in something greater than them. I wish to notify you that our company will incorporate these elements into its culture. The features will motivate you (my future employees) to become more creative and thoughtful.
I want to assure you that the management will provide you with autonomy to inspire more personal investment in the work.
Mastery, autonomy, and mastery are the building blocks of the new business operating system in the modern world (Pink, 2009). The organization will use modern approaches to increase the employee’s autonomy. For instance, the organization will employ the Results Only Work Environment approach, which allows the employees to work on whatever hours they want as long as they work. This is important since it maximizes autonomy, productivity and reduces staff turnover.
I want to assure you that the organization will promote intrinsic motivation and ensure the critical elements of motivation are at play. The management will use intrinsic motivation as the primary way of engaging the employees. This is vital as it will help us make the business stronger, achieve organizational goals, and change the world.
I believe intrinsic motivation will work for the good of the business and employees. Please feel free to work with our organization in the future since it is a good place for all of us.
I look forward to working with you and making the world a better place in the future.
One of the important writing strategies that I used was summarizing. After listening to the video, I reflected on the main ideas and restated them in my work using my own words according to my understanding. The writing strategy was essential since it allowed me to outline the main ideas and explore them comprehensively.

Like how they boycotted our wedding because it wasnt in a catholic church *insert eye roll*.

What are the potential risks and benefits of this application and resolution?) Instructions Consider the following case for analysis: Brandy is a therapist who works primarily with children, whom Robert contacted 8 months ago. Robert was widowed almost a year ago and is the father of three children. Brandy met Robert twice, along with each of the children, for three therapy sessions. Robert had asked Brandy to evaluate the children’s mental health after losing their mother. She had subsequently referred the children who needed support to other therapists as she was about to take a medical leave of absence for surgery. During the three sessions that Robert had had with Brandy, the conversation focused on the needs of the children, as Robert had indicated that he was seeing another counsellor to help him deal with his own grief. Presently, both the kids and Robert are doing well, and Robert recently called Brandy to ask her to have lunch with him. Brandy was delighted and accepted, as she had found Robert to be a fascinating man when she had met him. Answer the following questions: Here are provided questions based on the presented case. Make references to relevant ethical codes and standards and fundamental moral principles in your responses. * Final Paper Outline – Students that apply for registration with Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) or other colleges (i.e. CRPO, BCACC) as counsellors, therapists, mental health service providers are required to follow this model. Members of these colleges (in addition to the CCPA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics) may also analyze the case in terms of the principles of CRPO Code of Ethics or BCACC Code of Ethical Conduct and Standards of Clinical Practice: CCPA Ethical Decision-Making Model This model is a principle-based decision-making model that incorporates the use of emotional decision-making. For your information, this model below is outlined in the Code of Ethics (pg. 3) and on pages 16 to 18 of the casebook. (with the description in Appendix A, on page 539). Step One: A. What are the key ethical issues in this situation? Counsellors determine the type of problem or ethical dilemma. They then collect information about the problem, identify primary concerns/conflicts, and consider potential responsibilities. In the casebook, authors have suggested that the students describe parameters, define potential issues, or determine the type of ethical dilemma. Step Two: A. What ethical articles from the CCPA Code of Ethics are relevant to this situation? B. Are there policies, case law, statutes, regulations, bylaws or other related articles that are relevant to this situation? Provide related articles from CCPA (Code of Ethics) in relation to the presented case scenario. Review the CCPA Code of Ethics to see if ethical articles (e.g., confidentiality or record keeping) are appropriate for your particular situation. For this step, focus on using the Standards of Practice. Step Three: A. Which of the six ethical principles are of major importance in this situation? This step also involves securing additional information and examining the probable outcomes of various courses of action. Examine moral and ethical principles that are relevant and important to the situation. These principles are: a) autonomy – allowing clients the freedom to make informed decisions and to plan their own action b) nonmaleficence – doing no harm c) beneficence – doing good d) justice – acting fairly e) fidelity – upholding the clients trust Step Four: A. How can the relevant ethical articles be applied in this circumstance? B. How might any conflict between ethical principles be resolved? C. What are the potential risks and benefits of this application and resolution? Choose the most important principles and relevant ethical articles and start implementing some possible actions by: a) Generating alternatives and examining the risks and benefits of each, b) Securing additional information, and c) Examining probable results of various courses of action. Step Five: A. What do my feelings and intuitions tell me to do in this situation? (See also Virtue-Based Ethical Decision-Making) Up to this point, decision making was mainly cognitive and rational. In this step, the task is to use emotional decision-making techniques. At this stage, counsellors can add some elements of virtue ethics, especially considering all the options below that can best help and show respect for the client. Consider the emotional response to the dilemma and answer these questions: 1. What emotions and intuition am I aware of as I consider this ethical dilemma, and what are they telling me to do? 2. How can my values best show caring for the client in this situation? 3. How will my decision affect other relevant individuals in this ethical dilemma? 4. What decision would I feel best about publicizing? 5. What decision would best define who I am as a person? Step Six: A. What plan of action will be most helpful in this situation? B. Follow up to evaluate the appropriateness, adequacy, and effectiveness of the course of action taken. Identify any adjustments necessary to optimize the outcome. Counsellors should consider the breadth and depth of possibilities. What are all the different ways that the situation might be handled? How feasible is each possibility? Identify and follow the specific action plan, evaluate it, and provide the rationale for how to adjust any negative or neutral consequences that may occur as a result of your actions. SIDE NOTE: when citing the Standard of Practices, CCPA please make sure you cite so that it looks like the following: “In section B8 of the Standards of Practice……………….. ( Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association [CCPA], 2020, pg. 27). “

This is for a discussion post Spotify has been in the news the past week. Joe Rogan in 2020 argumentative essay help: argumentative essay help
This is for a discussion post
Spotify has been in the news the past week. Joe Rogan in 2020 signed a $100 million contract with Spotify as one of the nation’s most-listed-to podcasters, and his takes on coronavirus vaccinations do not (to put it charitably) match conventional science. He interviews people who don’t buy into the conventional science, too.
This has led to a backlash, with hundreds of health-care workers asking Spotify to remove him and some musicians (such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell) telling Spotify to take down their music because they don’t want to be involved with a company that knowingly allows misinformation to spread.
The Verge.com over the weekend showed how Spotify knew that Rogen’s talk didn’t follow Spotify rules. It noted some of the rules, which had not been made public.
The company on Sunday went public, posting its “platform rules and approach to Covid-19,” and you can go to Mediagazer and search for “Spotify publishes its long-standing Platform Rules” and look underneath to see links to the reactions. The actual “platform rules” are here.
The company says it will “add a content advisory to any podcast episode that includes a discussion about COVID-19.)
Also, Rogan posted on Instagram over the weekend to defend his podcast and apologize to Spotify for kicking up the backlash.
This stuff raises many ethical issues, related to communicating science, commerce, a platform’s ethical responsibility, the ethics of the communicator, the ethics of free speech and First Amendment, and more that you’ll think of…
Talk about such things. I’m not pointing you in any direction, but I want to see how this week’s conversation flows.
Note: Referring to the philosophical approaches you saw last week matters! Use moral philosophy, not moralizing.
