Others argue that the new rule changes will affect the game in many negative ways in the future and overall change the game.
NIL is a new rule implemented this year by the NCAA which allows for the student athletes to sell their Name Image and likeness and make profit with no restriction on how much they can get paid. This new NIL rule will change the game of college football in negative ways. With the NIL rule the NCAA also took out the transfer sit out for one year rule and this has changed the game in ways never seen before. I spoke with the assistant athletic director here at TCU and asked him for his perspective and he says that the NIL is changing the game and right now many people don’t know how to handle it because the rules are all over the place. An article from Forbes that I have chosen explains how the NCAA had no choice but to change the rule, but this will have a negative effect of the game if things are not regulated. In this article they break down the transfer portal, amount players are getting paid, and TV contracts all big factors in the new era of college football.
Along with all the new rule, two of them include the transfer rule and no salary cap rule based on how much a player can make. With these rule changes now, there is no difference between college football and NFL football because now players can basically have salary’s and can be traded. If a really good player wanted to play for 4 years and 4 different schools and there were people willing to pay, he could. For the game of college football to continue, regulations and salary caps need to be implemented because not even a year since the rule have been changed things are getting out of hand and can only increase from here. Another problem that this is creating is that universities are supposed to have to control or link to the college athletes getting paid but, in many cases, universities are not following this and getting involved. I have spoken to some different people pertaining this and they have told me that if you as a university don’t get involved with the NIL then you will get behind the eight ball because other schools are already doing this even though it is against the rules. The problem is that there is a lot of gray area in the new wave of college football and many people are trying t keep up with the curb.
In another one of my articles, it talks about how the NIL will benefit athletes with new opportunities and give them things they and their families are not used to. For years people have been complaining about how the NCAA makes billions off of player jersey sells and media attention while the actual athletes who work receive nothing. This new rule makes it fair for the student athletes who work hard and achieve great standard and they are rewarded. Players now how the chance to improve their lifestyles a little bit and give back to their family with new contracts all based on your skill level.
There are arguments to both sides of the topic but at the end of the day without the correct regulations the NIL, the transfer rule, and no salary caps are going to change the game forever in negative ways. The Name, Image and Likeness rule does have some upsides as now players can have opportunities to pay off debts if they have them and educate themselves at a younger age how to handle money and the responsibilities that come with it. In the end the NCAA has to structure these new rules and era of college football because right now many are confused and trying to keep up with everyone else.
